Winter Use Plan and EIS

Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks

The National park Service is beginning to prepare a long-term plan for managing winter recreational use in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and the John D. Rockerfeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway. Currently, winter use in the parks is operating under a temporary winter use plan due to two previous NPS decisions about winter use that were returned back to the NPS for further work by the federal courts.

The temporary plan is intended to be in effect for three winter seasons, while the NPS prepares a long-term winter plan. The temporary winter use plan allows snowmobiles and snowcoachs to be used through the winter of 2006-2007.

The planning process that is going on right now will result in a decision that will be implemented beginning with the winter of 2007-2008.

SAWS strongly encourages you to submit your comments during this scoping period to help in aiding draft the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
