SAWS Editorial
Proposed
Winter Use Rule for Yellowstone National Park:
I received the following two e-mails from our opposition this week. It is imperative that we comment AGAIN for
snowmobile access to Yellowstone at:
http://www.nps.gov/yell/planvisit/winteruse/
If you’re wondering why further comments are needed,
take a moment to read what our adversaries are saying about us below. Any comments by me are in purple. I
have highlighted particularly important comments by them in red. FYI, the misspellings are theirs (I copied
and pasted them). To review the S.A.W.S.

Now, as you all know, these
are my personal opines. So….stick with me here for a minute. The one consistent issue these folks employ
is: “scare the you-know- what out of people and
collect their cash.”
Personally, I have a pretty
full life and, I was drawn to S.A.W.S. because I could make a difference. Now we can all make a difference by simply
commenting on issues effecting snowmobiling via e-mail and websites. We want this process to be easy, quick and effective. After being banned from my favorite mountain
near Bend, Oregon last Spring,
I realized that it is better to be involved prior to the closure being made vs trying to undue a closure created by vengeful, angry
extremists who use fright, anger and sometimes plain dishonesty to deny us
access to public lands.
Because of the latest round
of fear mongering, we need, once again, to comment on allowing snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park. We need to outnumber the vocal minority. Please go to the website provided above and
let them know that you support allowing snowmobiles in Yellowstone without babysitters (guides). It’s our park too!
Remember, OCTOBER
7, 2004
is the last day for comments!

Park Service on the fast track to allow
snowmobiles back in Yellowstone!
Many
of you sent messages to the Park Service recently telling the agancy that snowmobiles simply do not belong in a place as special as
Yellowstone. But the Bush Administration will stop at nothing to have
these machines
in our parks, and they have already released a proposed rule to allow as many as 720
snowmobiles per day! (It’s good to know which Presidential candidate is looking
out for my interests).
The Park Service is accepting
comments on this rule, and once again we need to send them a simple message: no
snowmobiles in Yellowstone.
If you've already commented in the last two weeks, we need you again; if you haven't commented yet, here's your chance to
give them your $0.02 worth!

Dear Dick,
The
administration wants to double the number of snowmobiles from the
average last year to allow 720 snowmobiles a day into Yellowstone!
Is this d骠
vu? Didn't
we fight last year to stop the use of snowmobiles in our nation's first
and most beloved national
park? Of course we did - and yet, they're at it again.
Since the 1990s, two studies by the National Park Service (including
one conducted under the current administration) concluded that
snowmobiles weren't a good idea for Yellowstone. (They neglect to mention all
the
other studies to the contrary) You and I could have told
them the same thing - snowmobiles are noisy, dirty, and detrimental to
wildlife, visitors, and park employees.
To help support NPCA in this and all of our critical work, I ask you to
make an
immediate and generous contribution to the National Parks Conservation
Association
right now, via our secure server. Simply click here to make your tax-deductible
contribution.
Park staff are advised to wear earplugs to protect their
hearing from the shrill whine of snowmobile engines and air masks to
filter the pollution snowmobiles leave behind. Yet no recommendation
can help wolves, elk, deer, bison, and other park species that
encounter snowmobiles.
The
administration's action places the park's natural beauty, winter
tranquility, and balance of nature at risk.
This proposal is outrageous, and together we must put a stop to it so decisively that
no one will ever again attempt to use a national park for motorized
misuse (use). Will you
help us?
Any attempt to open Yellowstone to an increase in
snowmobiles is absolutely outrageous, and we won't stand for it!
If you agree, I need you to make an immediate and generous contribution to the
National Parks Conservation Association right now. Please click here.
If you prefer you can donate by phone by calling NPCA member services
at: 1-800-628-7275 Monday - Friday between 9-5 (EST).
We have
to get the word out, and mobilize others who believe as you and I do
that we must protect Yellowstone's winter tranquility, clear air, and
wondrous wildlife from continued inappropriate snowmobile use
(what
they really mean is all use by motorized vehicles)
-- pass this e-mail on to your family, friends, and colleagues.
Thank you for your continued support,

Thomas C. Kiernan
NPCA President
P.S. You
can also help by sending a message to the National Park Service, which
will be accepting public comments on the proposal between now and
October 7th and you can read about our six-year campaign to phase out
noisy, dirty snowmobiles in Yellowstone. .
Since 1919, the nonpartisan (this must be a misprint)
National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) has been the leading
voice of the American people in the fight to safeguard our National
Park System. NPCA, its members, and partners work together to protect the
park system and preserve our nation's natural, historical, and cultural
heritage for generations to come.
